Social media and news outlets seem to be filling my feed with horrific accidents, worldwide natural disasters, political turmoil and personal loss. For those who know me, I'm a pretty happy person most of the time but all this negativity can take a toll on anyone. So what's the answer to maintaining a positive outlook and being a shining light to those around you during difficult times? Well, I have a simple philosophy. I just don't buy into it.
I know this sounds easier said than done but there are things you can do to keep your daily life positive. Yes, I check Facebook and instagram daily but to be honest....I have learned to hide posts from people who spout things that don't bring me joy. I subscribe to groups and pages who offer positive insights, useful information and most of all, GREAT ART! Don't get me wrong, I'm not burying my head in the sand, I'm just choosing when and where to get the real news I want to hear.
It also helps me to stay active and engaged with my local community of artists and my personal tribe of friends. I choose to surround myself with like minded people who want to see the good in things and want to inspire positive change.
Recently the Australian brush fires and the tragic helicopter crash that killed 9 people made me reflect on how blessed I really am. Life is precious and can be gone in an instant. Don't wait for tomorrow to do the things you love and be with the people you care most about.
Find ways to give back. You'll be surprised how good this will make you feel and how your actions may inspire others to do the same. Everyone has a gift, use it! I painted a pained Koala bear in the brushfire and put it up for auction to raise money to rescue the Koalas. To my surprise there was tremendous interest. I didn't make a dime but $325 was sent to help the Koalas. Other artists followed my lead. There's nothing more satisfying than lending a hand.
And of course, I paint, paint and paint some more, expressing my view of our wonderful world, hoping to bring joy to my viewers. Be the light and the positive influence you want!
